Powder Bath Glow-up
We’ve been so busy these last few months. In September, Tayler and I took our first “vacation” without Lachlan. We had to use a couple of flight vouchers from a canceled 2020 Vegas trip. One of Tayler’s best friend’s moved to Boston during the pandemic, and we haven’t seen them since. So, we took off to Boston for a long weekend while Momma kept the kid at home in Charleston.
It was nice to get away and explore new cities together.
In October, we spent a week at the beach with my family, Lachlan gave us a stomach bug, and we did all things Halloween.
A couple of weeks ago, we took Tayler’s parents to the Coastal Carolina Fair. The fair is something me and Tayler look forward to every year. We love a good people-watching sesh with a side of french fries. Lach really enjoyed watching the pig races with his GrandDaddy and suckering his Mimi into paying twenty bucks for a Dollar Tree water gun. Lach was not into pony rides and thought the Choo Choo Charlie train was complete trash.
I took Lach and Nana (my Momma’s momma) up to my parents’ house last weekend. We spent Friday afternoon at the Science Center visiting dinosaurs, doing experiments, ignoring most of the exhibits, and pushing every button that crossed our path. Lachlan loves spending a few good days up at GrandBob and Nanny’s dismantling their home, terrorizing their poodles, and generally wreaking havoc throughout an entirely different ZIP code.
Meanwhile, in between all of these trips and activities, we’ve been updating our powder bath too. A project that theoretically should’ve taken a weekend… took us two months. Such is life around the Fulton house, though.
I’ve mentioned before that the home we currently live in wasn’t exactly our first choice.
Sorry, House.
It has great potential, just lacks some of the upgrades we would have liked. For example, we have a dedicated area for a butler’s pantry but, uhh, no actual butler’s pantry. So, needless to say, we have a long list of upgrades we hope to get to… at some point.
The powder bath was an easy one to mark off said list. It was pretty much a blank slate, and I wanted to change it all.
Ignore the naked model in the pic – it’s the only “before” photo I could find.
The whole room was lame. Pedestal sinks? Ugh, the worst. I can’t stand clutter, and I hate having to figure out alternative storage solutions to hide all our crap. If Tayler has heard me say this once, he’s heard it a million times: “What’s all this shit doing up here? The [insert random object {e.g., drill, laptop, dirty diaper, etc.} here] isn’t a showpiece. It doesn’t belong on the countertop. Put it where it belongs, please.”
“Where it belongs” = where I can’t see it.
First things first, the powder bath needed a vanity.
Here’s what we ended up with:
The new vanity fills up the space so much better than the original pedestal sink.
I painted three of the walls the same color blue I used on our board and batten down the hall (the powder bath is off the hallway). We wallpapered the back wall, replaced the towel ring and toilet paper holder, swapped out the stock hardware on the vanity, and updated the light fixture.
What we learned:
- Tayler is a much better wallpaperer than I am.
- “Brushed gold” translates to about 7,500 different colors.
- TJ Maxx switches to all Christmas, all the time… in October. If you need anything without a reindeer on it during this quarter, it’ll have to wait until January.
What we used:
- Vanity: allen + roth Helena 30-in White Undermount Single Sink Bathroom Vanity with Carrara Engineered Marble Top
- Gold vanity hardware: The only gold pulls that matched the length of the pre-drilled vanity holes at Lowe’s.
- Faucet: Phiestina Brushed Gold 2-handle 8-in widespread WaterSense High-arc Bathroom Sink Faucet with Drain
- Towel ring/toilet paper holder: TNOMS Gold 5 Pieces Bathroom Hardware Accessories Set Towel Bar Set
- Light fixture: Bathroom Vanity Lights, 5-Light Bathroom Light Fixtures, Mid Century Modern Gold Bathroom Light
- Mirror: ZENMAG Gold Bathroom Mirror, 36″×24″ Bathroom Mirror
- Wallpaper: Grasscloth – Blue Wallpaper
- Paint: HGTV Home® by Sherwin Williams Showcase® Interior Paint & Primer in Blue Coal (Flat)
- Decor (e.g., wall art, vase, soap/lotion set, hand towel): TJ Maxx or HomeGoods. And the fake hydrangeas are from Hobby Lobby.
- Rug: Walmart (old)
All in, we spent around $900 to transform our sad little powder bath into a beautiful potty oasis.
The dogs even prefer drinking out of the toilet in the new powder bath!
